Narrated by Daddy Jeremy:
On June 5th we made the pilgrimage to Holland,
Michigan to visit grandma and grandpa Facknitz for a week. Since Elaine doesn’t
like car rides at his time, we thought it wise to depart around 6 pm, which is
close to her bedtime. Elaine expressed that she was ready for a break from her
car seat just outside Litchfield, IL, where we pulled off the
interstate and walked her around an empty lot - hoping she’d fall back
asleep. She didn’t, but after 40 minutes of expressing her disdain, she finally
succumbed to the sandman and we drove the rest of the way (7 hours worth) in
relative silence. We pulled into Holland around 2:30 am, exhausted but happy to
be there.
The 5 of us stayed close throughout the week, minus a
Whitecaps game in Grand Rapids that was only attended by the boys, Erick and
Jeremy. Grandma and Grandpa F LOVED having Elaine in their new downtown Holland
loft. Lindsay loved having two more adults around to share the entertaining
load. Grandpa F took her for walks every day around town, and Grandma F kept
Elaine enthralled with the living room dimmer light. We had plenty of chances
to get away for momma/poppa time, and by golly, we took it. Dinner at Alpen
Rose, dessert at Kilwins or The Peanut Store, all within walking distance.
Don't forget brews at New Holland Brewing Company... where, eventually, we did
some work and played out on the patio for the happy-hour-goers.
We also hit the beach a few times, with Lake Michigan being
a mere 5 miles from Holland. The water was too frigid for swimming, but we
still managed to “baptize” Lady Elaine with a quick dunk of her toes. She was
not happy, and poppa was glad no one had turned him in to Holland authorities
for child abuse! Nevertheless, Elaine is now an honorary Michigander, which
means once she says the word "back", it will have 2 syllables.
Uncle Jarod joined us Thursday, as well as great grandma
Facknitz, Aunt Diane and Uncle Karl, great grandma and great grandpa Zig and
second cousin Emily. On Friday, MORE family came over from the east side of the
mitten for our show at New Holland; Erica, Hugh, Brad and Paula. Jeremy’s
friends Jason and Katy, Brandi and Regina made the drive as well, and all were
able to hold Elaine and get to know our new biggest fan. Big thanks to everyone
who came over, up, down and around to see us!
