See the Magic Show!

Joyful times! So fun!

This is what I witness (and feel) at various times through the day & night. Significant shifts and bumps in my abdomen from my roommate, Peanut.

Yes, I am breathing slowly, so that accounts for some of the movement. But through this taping, I stayed completely still. So any significant shifts you see is all Peanut. There's a big shift at the beginning that includes the whole belly. Then through the rest of the video you see Peanut has the hiccups (or is just a rhythmic kicker). Look for the relatively consistent little bumps moving the left side of my belly.

The Dawn of Man

30 weeks…

The Metamorphosis: Third Trimester (Weeks 28 - 32)

The metamorphosis continues! We're in the big time now folks!

I must say, I've been feeling great for the majority of this pregnancy. Especially through most of the second trimester & this early time in the third. With the baby being so big now, I can feel all movement, not just kicks. I can feel when the baby moves positions, hiccups, and digs into my right side (ouch!). The next post will show you the amazing movement happening these days, visible with the naked eye!

Symptoms update
There was a recent request to actually talk more about how I've felt through all this. So, here's a bit of updating:

First Trimester: Of course was a little rocky with the laundry list of new sensations & yuckies. (laundry list being: consistent nausea, frequent urination, sore breasts, heightened smell, food aversions, bleeding gums, crazy dreams, exhaustion, skin break outs,  flatulence that could peel paint, faster nail growth, mood swings, etc). But I can say I'm one of the lucky ones. I never threw up, which was very nice. And honestly, but the end of week 10 I felt a lot more normal. I just had to chain myself to my fridge for the first two months because my kind of nausea demanded that I always have something in my stomach. I know its hard to believe but I honestly got really sick of eating.

Second Trimester: Definitely smoother than the first but not without its issues. My hips got achy around week 16 so I needed to sleep with a body pillow from that point on. I also had mild headaches for about 3 weeks from 12 - 15 which were more annoying than anything. I also experienced much larger mood swings a couple times where I would cry, then get really angry, then cry, then freak out… over nothing of course. In these times I had to just put myself to bed. Of course by week 22 I was bulgy enough to start grunting as I got in and out of bed. Tying shoes became a chore and crossing my legs became more difficult. I also started back strengthening exercises to help with ciatic aches.

At week 18, the weekend of our first anniversary, I felt the baby move for the first time. Very fun! It just felt like a golf ball sized bulge moved down in my pelvis. "I think I just felt the baby!" I said to Jeremy. The next week or so I could feel kicks and grabbed Jeremy's hand and pushed it into my pelvis. He felt them too and promptly started to freak out in excitement. Since then, its been a steady increase in activity and exciting new sensations.

And now… Third Trimester!
Adjusting to my new size is actually fun. I'm glad I don't suffer from any body image issues cause Peanut and I are weighing in at 33 pounds over where I started at this point. And honestly, as long as my clothes are elastic and comfortable, I have no problem with that! I'm loving it.
As for symptoms to report, I've had some spells of acid reflux that haven't been fun, the right side of my lower back got a bit strained from raking leaves (better now with exercises), occasional bleeding gums, hips are hurting again at night, and the grunting has become pretty regular. Honestly, you don't know how much you use your abdomen muscles till they're gone.

Around week 29 Peanut dug some part of his/her body into my right side, deep, like he/she was a burrowing animal trying to make a home in my kidney. "Where are you trying to go?" I'd ask as I pushed back. It was certainly uncomfortable. P stayed there for about 4 days then moved positions, which was welcome. After reading about baby mapping online (trying to tell how your baby is lying in your belly), I've been able to tell when Peanut is breech (kicks in pelvis), head down (kicks in ribs), or side lying (kicks in side). Of course this is just an estimation on my part by feeling around externally on my tummy but I can confirm that Peanut is healthy and active in there!

And now, onto new photos for this time frame:

Week 28: black is slimming, of course.

Week 29: Tis the Season (to eat what you want!)

Week 31: Its a winter land, Peanut!
Peanut is about 16 inches long now, around 3 1/2 pounds. Poised and ready for a growth spurt!

How to Change a Diaper: By Jeremy Facknitz

1) Get your nose as close to the offensive odor as possible.

2) Tell everyone to acknowledge that YOU are going to voluntarily change a diaper so they may all gleefully sing your praises.

3) Maintain the baby's modesty… or teach it to be ashamed of its private parts.

4) Quietly threaten the baby before attaching the new diaper.

Congratulations, you are ready to be a father.

Babymoon! Trip to Memphis

So, before baby arrives, we thought it would be a great idea to fit in a special little trip… like a honeymoon. We figured the best time for this would be at the end of the second trimester (before I get really big and before snow impedes travel.) So, Jeremy planned a fabulous weekend in our neighboring city, Memphis.

This was my first time visiting Memphis, the walkable and tourist friendly small city. We certainly packed a lot into 2 days! It was a wonderful babymoon!

Breakfast at The Arcade, Elvis' favorite eatery.

On to Graceland!

The king's TV room

Pool room

Lounge "Jungle Room"

His old racket ball room, now an homage to awards & Vegas suits.

Beale Street (lots of music, lots of restaurants & bars)

The Peabody Hotel: live ducks in the fountain

Legendary Sun Studio
birthplace of Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others

Elvis actually sang into this mic.

Civil Rights Museum at Lorraine Hotel
(Where MLK was assassinated)

STAX Museum
Famous recording studio for soul music artists like The Staple Singers, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave. The museum covers the history of soul music and the most influential artists of the 20th century.
We actually bought Peanut a little STAX onesie. The hippest babe on the block next summer!

The Metamorphosis: Second Trimester

Now we see a little more belly action. From Sept - Nov, Mama L gets some relief from first trimester discomforts but now enjoys periodic heartburn, headaches, and lower back pain. But comparatively, second trimester is fabulous!

In these few months, we go from normal clothes to savoring the bountiful elastic world that is maternity clothes. The biggest leap is baby's growth spurt from 15 - 20 weeks. Pretty big difference!

Week 15
P's about 4 inches long

Week 17
P's about 5 inches & 5 ounces

Week 19
P's about 7 inches & 8 oz

Week 21
Ps' about 10 inches & 3/4 lb

Week 24
P's about 12 inches & 1 1/3 lb

At this point, Peanut was a skeleton for Halloween

Week 26
Peanut's about 14 inches & 1 2/3 lb

Peanut's First Photo Shoot!

Say cheese!

At 21 weeks, Peanut had his/her first photo shoot via ultrasound. I wish they took video instead of pictures because it was SO wonderful seeing baby Peanut moving around in real time. During the 10 minutes we had the ultra sound, we saw P arch his/her back, hiccup, reach arms behind head, cross and uncross legs, swallow… all things little babies do! So wonderful!

We did NOT find out if P is a boy or a girl. Jeremy will announce to the world on P's birth-day.

(When looking at these pictures, keep in mind that black is fluid, white is solid matter.)

Peanut's Profile
P's head is to the right of the frame, belly in the middle & left side. The black fluid is outlining the profile perfectly. See P's cute little pointy nose and full lips!

Peanut Arching Back
Here's a similar picture. It shows Peanut arching his/her back. You can see the chin raised up in comparison to the picture above.

Hand in front of Face
This picture is oriented in the same way as above, only Peanut brought his/her right hand up in front of face, like he's gonna suck his/her thumb. It's basically the white blur above the mouth but you can make out little fingers, hand, and arm.

Arm
See the chicken wing in the middle of the frame? That's P's arm & hand.

Knees & Shins
P's feet are pointing towards 10 o'clock position, ankles crossed. Such cute little knobby knees! You can also see the round belly above them.

Foot
Ok, look at the white blotch towards the middle, left side of frame. That's the faint outline of P's foot. Its tilted so the toes are pointing towards 3 o'clock-ish and heel is near 9 o'clock-ish. Big toe is at the top. There are 2 tiny 'X's on the right and left sides of the blotch. Those are measuring how long P's foot is.
